Finding Accommodation
Kigali is the city with most number of accommodation facilities in Rwanda. The variety of accommodation available range from dormitories run by churches to 5 star Hotels. The number of accommodation facilities are on the increase even so there are situation when all the hotels are booked.
Luxury Accommodation:
There are many hotels providing world class service in Rwanda. These include hotels affiliated to international chains. There are also lodges in Volcanoes National Park , Nyungwe Forest National Park and Akagera National Park which are of world class standing. The accommodation at the parks are usually of the finest quality and range from around 150$ to 600$ at the luxury lodges. In recent time many Boutique hotels have started in Kigali, they have luxurious rooms , foreign chefs , a great collection of wines and are usually in areas of Kigali that offer the best views of the city. These hotels are usually large houses that have been converted.
Middle Class Accommodation:
Most of the new hotel come under this category they form the core of the accommodation facility in Rwanda. Seeing that tourist accomodation in Rwanda was becoming a problem the national development bank has been funding the development of such accommodation facilities. These are mostly small hotels with around 20-30 rooms, they usually have a restaurant, conference facilities and a swimming pool. The rooms at such accommodation facilities go for 60$ -150$ this usually include breakfast.
Longer term Accommodation (more than 15 days):
Almost all the middle class accommodation facilities offer a discount for stays longer than 7 days, you should ask for the discount the hotel gives before booking. There are apartment hotels all over Kigali, mostly in Nyarutarama area. If you are a group of more than 4 people and need to stay for longer than 15 days, apartment hotels are the best option. Usually these are fully furnished houses with gated security and house keeping staff.
Accommodation for those on a budget:
There are only few hotels with rooms going at less than 40$ and so they are mostly occupied. There are smaller guest houses through out Kigali and other cities offering decent accommodation, but these rarely have a kitchen and the room rent does not include breakfast. The best option for travelers on a budget are the dormitories offered by religious institution. Most of them are not openly rented out, you are better of making arrangements from your local church or mosque before you travel , at the least you will need a letter from your congregation.
