Akagera National Park
It is the oldest National Park in Rwanda, it was established in 1934. Its primary aim was to protect the animals in the there eco-regions of Savannah, mountain and Swamp. The park is situated in North Eastern Rwanda at the border with Tanzania. It was used as settlement areas by returning refugees. The goverment has been revitalizing its conservation efforts at the Akagera National park for he past few years.
Akagera National Park occupies around 1000 Square kilometer, it takes around 2 hours to reach Akagera National Park from Kigali. The public transport facilities end at around 25 kilometers away from the park, but one can find a Moto to the Park entrance or the Lodge. The lodge provides reasonable rates and decent accommodation. There are some camping sites within the park that can be accessed by contacting the park office. If you are camping do remember to bring all the necessary supplies including food, water and charcoal.
Private 4 wheel drive transportation is highly recommended, as you will need it for visiting the parks. There are mainly three activities at the park , the Animal safari which includes Zebras, Giraffes , Hippopotamus, Crocodiles, Impalas and many other such animals. The second activity is bird watching there is a large number of birds which can be found in the Akagera National Park and not in Nyungwe Forest National Park, because of the swamps and the Savannah environments. The third activity is actually a group of activities, like boat rides, camping , nature walks etc.
The park entrance Fees is 20$ , there are charges for other activities etc a tariff card can be obtained at the park entrance. The park operates both dawn and dusk safaris. The guides are very friendly and there are specially trained women guides also.
