Taxis are mainly of two types in Kigali there are the ones that are operated by individuals which you can find with proper markings indicating that they are taxis and the other group are the more professorially run services operated by a single large operator. The Kigali Airport Taxis and Kigali Taxi Service are the two major groups, there are others companies also running taxis , but these are the largest and both operate a number you can call to sumon a taxis. 3122 for Kigali Taxis service and 476586 for Kigali Aiport Taxi service.

In the other cities of Rwanda like Butare or Ruhengeri, you will only find taxis operated by individuals and in such cities Motos are the preferred mode of transportation. The professorially run taxis have meters and you pay what the meter shows and they give you a printed receipt for the same. These are the most expensive mode of public transport in Kigali.

Taxis are generally expensive and will test your negotiation skills, when you negotiate start directly at half of what the driver is asking for. A general trick used by drivers is to act as if they do not speak English so that you cant negotiate the best option in this case is to just say you are looking for a driver who speaks English and walk away.

If you happen to find a guy who is reasonable and whom you feel , you can hire again, ask for his number and stick to him because when they know that there is more business coming they usually charge less.
